James Montana has recently been named as the Head Coach for the Commack varsity program. Just last year, Coach Montana was on the sidelines for the then Long Island Lizards (now New York Lizards). Coach Montana assisted with the offense, assisted in game planning and ran the box on game days. Before the Lizards, he spent 6 years as the assistant coach at Stony Brook University where he was the offensive coordinator as well as the goalie coach. After graduation from Quinnipiac University in 2006, Coach Montana joined the staff under then head coach, Rick Sowell. Coach Montana’s 6th and final year at Stony Brook was spent as the Director of Lacrosse Operations for the men’s and women’s lacrosse programs.
Under Coach Montana, Stony Brook’s offense was one of the nation's best in 2010. That year SB had their first ever-1st Team All America selection, USILA Player of the Year, America East Player of the Year and Tewaarton finalist. The Seawolves averaged 13.24 goals per game, fourth best in the nation. Also, during his time at Stony Brook, Coach Montana assisted in 3 America East championship games – winning one in 2010. Along with the AE Championship in 2010, Stony Brook went on to win an NCAA playoff game – 1st ever in program history. Coach Montana assisted in the recruitment and development of one USILA Enners Award winner, one two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist, five first-team All-America East Selections, three All-America selections, two America East Players of the Year, one America East Rookie of the Year, one Most Outstanding Player of the America East All-Championship Team, three 2011 MLL Draft Selections and five North/South game selections.
Coach Montana helped a goalie earn an All-America East first-team selection, to a .565 save percentage as he became Stony Brook's all-time leader in goalie wins for a season (13). That same goalie also set an America East Championship record with 34 saves in two games, posted a .600 save percentage during a nine-game winning streak and was part of a 15-0 shutout of Albany.
Coach Montana has been training in the MDP LaxZone system for over 10 years and has executed it at the highest levels as a player and a coach.
Outside of Coach Montana’s responsibilities on the field, he is on the Board of Directors for the Michael Magro Foundation – dedicated to the support of children with cancer and their families.
"I am extremely excited and honored to have the opportunity to help bring the “Lax Zone” system to the world. As a young athlete, I started training in a system that is now the “Lax Zone”. Through my early training I have been a part of the development and have seen it twist and turn over the years to its current polished package. As a player and a coach I have been involved in the entire growth cycle of the “Lax Zone” and it is now ready to be brought to the world. Teaming up with my mentor and best friend is a dream come true and I am looking forward to making the “Lax Zone” system the future of lacrosse."
